Dear All (and it’s many of you out there!),
A massive THANK YOU and HEARTFELT GRATITUDE for participating, enriching, engaging, experimenting, sharing, following and immersing into the world of 3rdedition of the Month of Performance Art –Berlin. MPA–B concluded yesterday, after a performative rollercoaster that saw up to 110 projects transforming the city of Berlin into, once again, one of the wildest and widest platforms for experimental, contemporary and independent performance art practices. Without the collective efforts, commitment, enthusiasm and dedication of all its hundreds of participating curators, artists, organisers, producers, supporters and followers, this May wouldn’t have been possible, and our work wouldn’t have been this rewarding. So thank you all for believing in the project, and for investing your creative energies and resources to make it happen. Performance Art is something that must be firstly and mostly experienced live. However the brilliant multimedia contributions from this year’s first team of bloggers, meant that we could share and provide rich and timely insights into the MPA–B programme, to performance art lovers and aficionados around the world, as well as offer further exposure to the parties involved. Thus much respect and gratitude go to Lizzie, Belle, Orion, Ena, Tina, Andrew and Caitlin. The posters are now being pulled down. The spaces cleaned up. The walls fixed. The gaffer tapes and A4s stored…As we collect the remnants of this wonderful edition, and reflect on what it has been, what is has brought about to the city’s independent performance art scene, and what it may be in the future, we bid you farewell with a song, and wish you a wonderful year. https://soundcloud.com/piratecatradio/07-q-lazzarus-goodbye-horses
Alright, we have been living in denial long enough. It's time to adjust to the truth and finally acknowledge that THIS is really IT: the Month of Performance Art–Berlin has come to an end. Very few words can summarise what an incredible month this has been. So we will leave them until tomorrow, after this fantastic final day of performance art projects has passed, and after we've recovered from tonight's epic MPA–B's CLOSING PARTY AT SHIFT CLUB… And now, for one last time, here is today's programme overview: The ON OFF MOMENTS exhibition at Grimmuseum, curated by Amelie Wedel and displaying works outside the realm of performance art by young artists that reveal a moment of absence in different ways, thereby disclosing paradoxes of presence / absence, visibility / invisibility, and self-referentiality / external-referentiality, is still on view today from 14:00 to 19:00 (free entrance). The exhibition runs until June 9th. More information here: http://www.mpa-b.org/may101.htmlhttp://www.grimmuseum.com/(CON)TEMPORARY SPACE-TIME closes it's month-long showcase of performance art from Taiwan, with an evening of performances, talks and an exhibition at Rosalux (starting at 17:00 - free entrance). Featuring live actions by 傅雅雯 Fu Ya-Wen, 林其蔚 Lin Chi-Wei, 湯皇珍 Tang Huang-Chen and 瓦旦.塢瑪 Watan Wuma and an exhibition with works by 湯皇珍 Tang Huang-Chen, 高俊宏 Kao Jun-Hong and 吳瑪悧 Wu Ma-Li, this grand closing promises to be a fantastic opportunity to see and learn more about the work of our Asian counterparts, who have come specifically to Berlin to present current trends in Taiwanese performance art making. More information here: http://www.mpa-b.org/lan-hungh-yun-ting-hung--i-chen-tsou.htmlhttps://www.facebook.com/events/296511667149952/Starting at 21:00 (entrance 7-5€) at OSHO Studio Berlin, Alexa Wilson & Friends will present EXTRAORDINARY ALIENS, a work that explores cultural, physical and emotional 'outsiderness' and 'insiderness' in a cross-disciplinary performance art, dance and video piece spanning Europe, America, New Zealand and Asia. The performance questions the elitism of power structures deeply embedded within our global and communal society in relation to the identity of bodies and the empowerment of self. More information here: http://www.mpa-b.org/may312.htmlhttp://www.alexawilson.blogspot.de/2013/04/mpa-b.htmlA-CURATE #2, a monthly event dedicated to crossborder practice in art and sound performance curated by Marianne Jacquet, also brings its programming to an end with another grand closing at Urban Spree. Hosted at SHIFT club and organised by the power ladies behind the curated series Us Inc., dedicated to celebrating and playing with the performativity of sexuality and gender, this epic closing party will kick off at 20:00 with a final scrumptious BBQ. The “Path Acts” will take place at Mehringplatz, in Kreuzberg from 1530-1600. People are invited to create and lead a group path or their own. More information here: http://www.mpa-b.org/may30.htmlhttp://r0inconnu.blogspot.com/Meanwhile Us inc. invite you to warm up the 2nd night of their curatorial series hosted at SHIFT club and to come down for a tasty BBQ at 17.00, before gathering inside the venue at 20.00 for XXX story time, during which Us Inc. will open up the space for anyone and everyone to come and share their story. With no documentation of the evening, what happens at this story night stays at the story night! Through sharing our intimate, funny, embarrassing, and empowering experiences of gender and sexuality, we will celebrate our differences. The 3-6€ entry donation will go to Lamdba, a Berlin organisation supporting young LGBT people ( https://www.lambda-bb.de/) More information here: http://www.mpa-b.org/us-inc-amy-cade--leen-horsford.htmlhttps://www.facebook.com/events/157654511076003/And finally, at 2100 (sharp!!) Moran Sanderovich will carry out her hit and run performance INSIGHT SKIN at the Holocaust Memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe. The performance deals with the way repressed memories and interior conflicts shape and transform the human body. When presented at the Holocaust Memorial, questions of repetition are animated through the performance. “The path of modern humanity goes from humanity through nationality to bestiality” (Grillparzer, 1848). Due to the subversive character of the performance, the organisers recommend you arriving on time. More information here: http://www.mpa-b.org/dovrat-meron.html
Us Inc. are ready: the club is set, the artists have warmed up, the DJs await for you in their shiny booths and this duo of MPA-B Associate Curators, Leen Horsford and Amy Cade, can’t wait to welcome you all to their three day-long performance art extravaganza at SHIFT, dedicated to celebrating gender and sexuality. “It is not our differences that divide us, rather it is our inability to recognise, accept and celebrate those differences, ” (Audre Lorde) say their curatorial statement. And Us Inc. will do exactly that: celebrate those differences with a rich programme featuring storytelling, performances, lap dancing, music, audience interactions and more! Today is the BIG OPENING, kicking off at 17:00 with Rosana Cade’s “My Big Sister Taught Me This Lapdance” and continuing performances and music by Elise Terranova, Mischa Badasyan, Roberta Orlando, , The Savages. La Poulette, Dwayne Strike, Kay P. Rinha and Mad Kate | the Tide. More information here: http://www.mpa-b.org/us-inc-amy-cade—leen-horsford.html https://www.facebook.com/events/355842031183879/?ref=ts&fref=ts Big openings are also followed by big closings, and today Associate Curators Laura Biagioni, and Stefania Angeling & Judith Lavagna, will bring to an end their extensive programme with two performance evenings respectively at Uferstudio and L’Atelier Kunst(spiel)raum. SHADOWS OF aiKia, a movement-based interactive audio-visual performance inspired by the process of individuation, described by Carl Gustav Jung’s analytical psychology, will see the group Stratofyzika return to the stage, after having premiered the project at Platoon Kunsthalle’s first Salon Revolutionär. “Is it possible to shatter these projections and uncover the true self?” Conceptually inspired by the process of individuation, focusing on the “shadow aspects” of our egos; parts of personality which remain unconscious, only to be revealed in the mirror image of others. Tonight Uferstudio Studio 1 hosts two performances at 1930 and 2130 (10€/7€). More information here: http://www.mpa-b.org/laura-biagioni.html https://www.facebook.com/events/333549323415479/?fref=ts Meanwhile L’Atelier Kunst(spiel)raum in Kreuzberg, will present a finissage of the exhibition ‘Displaying the Instant’, featuring performances of Christian Patracchini (20h), Pierre-Étienne Morelle (20h30) and Nicolas Puyjalon (21h30). ‘DISPLAYING THE INSTANT’ is a time-based project investigating performance art in relation to its production of presence. The title refers to the question of how performative action can be exhibited, in consideration of the display of its documentation, protocoles, fragments, relics and artworks. ‘DISPLAYING THE INSTANT’ aims to focus on the ontology of this ‘immaterial labour’, where performance does not end with the experience in front of an audience. It rather constitutes an art form through the production of artefacts and their mediatization, both embodied into a ‘time-bound’ exhibition process. More information here: http://www.mpa-b.org/stefania-angelini—judith-lavagna.html The wonderful space Naherholung Sternchen will see artists Stella Veloce, Katie Dunbar, Emilio Gordoa and Anaïs Héraud presenting REFLEKTOR a performative and poetic introspection on the relationship between the desire to be witnessed and the individual quest for identity. Two performers and two composers will develop their work in this multimedia event, transcending the borders between music and performance. Working with light, voice, sound and movement, they adapt, confront and link their own practice in a three part installation developed in the unique and inspiring space. It starts at 20:00 (entrance donations) More information here: http://www.mpa-b.org/may291.html https://www.facebook.com/events/267916443345431/ And last but not least Agora collective, also conclude their project titled BRIDGES AND NON-BRIDGES OF PERFORMANCE ART AND CONTEMPORARY DANCE, which saw contemporary dancers and performance artists working hand in hand in an investigation of this seemingly different practices during the course of a month. The ongoing collaboration between Associate Curators Paula Marie Hildebrandt & Nathalie Fari, will materialise today in MADE IN OMNITOPIA-BERLIN (MIO-B 2013), starting at19:00 (free entrance) at the Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik in Moabit. Starting point for ‚made in omnitopia‘ is the concept of omnitopia originally coined by urban scholar Andrew Wood: ‚utopia‘ (not-place) and ‚heterotopia‘ (other-place) to reveal the shift from totalizing narratives to overlapping contradictory narratives. Omnitopia can best be described as a kind of embodied performance, always in the present tense and ‚made in omnitopia‘ – will trace the contours of omnitopia in today's Berlin, where public life in the sense of meaningful human interaction happens or could have happened... If you have missed the Warmer Brothers' HOT ACTS (URBAN RITUALS), you can still join tonight's dinner at Mab's apartment. There are 2-3 places available and you can reserve your own spot at: cookingnomad@gmail.com or you can call Pepe at +4915217014928. Four HOT ACTS have so far created four distinct evenings, which show that each ‘repetition’ reveals that each act remains a virgin. For hot acts # 5 “@!?&#”, the Warmer Brothers ask the same question: "what does it mean to be together? We cook the same thing, our leftovers. Yet for sure, it will turn out to be a different social experience. Moods change, energies shift, time passes, food gets cooked. A prayer to the guests: as you arrive at the meeting place with your excess food, things, and thoughts, try to smile at the possibility that these leftovers of yours might just be what we need to complete today’s hot social recipe. See you at Mab’s place!" More information here: http://hotacts.wordpress.com/2013/05/28/hot-acts-5/

Burmester & Florian Feigl comes to an end today at NeuHoch (19:00-22:00 - 3€ donation) with two performances and a follow up conversation with the Canadian artist Karin Turcot and Berlin-based Taiwanese artist Lan Hungh. Karin, who has travelled specifically from her native Québec to be with us during MPA-B, will present RECURRENCE both intended as "repetition", in which the singularity of the gesture disappears and gives way to a series where the expectation / apprehension that comes is grounded in the knowledge of what came, and as "trauma", the Remembrance of what this was. Meanwhile Lan will present MY PERFORMANCES ALWAYS FAIL. Every time Lan plans a performance, it always goes wrong. And he asks: "Why is that? Is it because Berliners are all performers? How should it be possible to successfully plan a failure?". More information here: http://www.mpa-b.org/joumlrn-j-burmester--florian-feigl.html
