[MPA-B ϟ PERFORMANCEKUNST-PREIS] THE DUVEL AWARD 2012
The winner of the first international prize dedicated to Performance Art is LUKE MUNN, who submitted nomination number 12 based on his own performance titled Touch Piece presented at A.A.A. (Abteilung für Alles Andere) during Direct Action Festival 2012 on May 26th.
Below is the 500-character long text that Luke submitted, and which will be used to create a new performance (or second variation) by another artist to be selected in June:
NOMINATION N. 12:
"Attempt to touch every visitor to the space before or during the event using any means necessary (i.e. social conventions, accidental collisions, restricting space) to ensure that the public are unaware the performance is taking place. ABOUT THE PRIZE
The [MPA-B ϟ PERFORMANCEKUNST-PREIS] THE DUVEL AWARD 2012 developed in partnership with the Belgian brewery Duvel Moortgat and its official German importer Bierlinie GmbH, was awarded on May 31st at the Denkerei in Kreuzberg during an extraordinary event moderated by Nicolas Y Galeazzi and presented by VerlegtVerlag. Performance Art’s complex nature as an extra-disciplinary praxis, language and community as well as its intricate relationship with issues of value, authorship and ownership led MPA-B to initiate the first ever Performance Art Award. The prize was endowed with 1000 euro and was awarded in a twofold process:
Through its unusual method and selection process, it should be clear that the MPA Performance Art Prize was an experimental format that questions the mechanisms of value and authorship in pursuit of a new economy for performative art practices. All nominations were presented to the public on May 31st and were open for debate, dialogue and discussion in order to determine the winning nomination.
The Duvel Award is a signature initiative of the MPA-B 2012 presented by VerlegtVerlag. It is the only international award devoted to performance art from around the world, providing an important platform for a generation of artists who are shaping the current discourse of contemporary art.

- the first 200 euro were awarded to the person (Luke Munn) whose written 500 character-long online nomination of an existing performance artwork (also referred to as the first variation) turned out to be the winning performance selected by public participants via the so-called Fishbowl Method, during the award ceremony at the Denkerei on May 31st
- the remaining 800 euro will now be used to commission a second variation for a new performance piece based on the winning written nomination. The commissioning process as well as the selection of the artist for the second variation started in June 2012.
