SUD.AKA Hector Canonge
SUD.AKA is a public durational performance which explores the attitudes, ideas and treatment of immigrants in major urban centers. From “sudaca,” a made-up word used to insult South American immigrants in Spain, I appropriate and transform it into SUD (South) and AKA (Also Known As) to resist and call attention to stereotypes. Carrying a small table through a designated site (plaza, boulevards, streets or square), I walk slowly stopping at intervals to scream “sudaca”. After the walk, I seat down, take out a long white fabric, and I invite people to write a sentence in response to a phrase from their national anthem. For Germany: “Einigkeit und Recht un Freicheit” (Unity and law and freedom) from the Deutschland Lied. After the fabric is full with writings, I wrap myself with it and in black, red, and yellow ribbons. End.
